Health Science, Respiratory Therapy Specialization BS

The Respiratory Therapy Specialization is a completion program offered in the Expressway format resulting in a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Health Science.

Students completing the BS in Health Science will:

Demonstrate an understanding of the patient care process from a social justice perspective.
Demonstrate critical reasoning skills in the patient care process by conducting a client assessment, identifying functional problems, and developing an appropriate intervention plan.
Interact and communicate professionally and courteously with clients while demonstrating the necessary clinical competencies required within their respective health care discipline.

Statement of Program Assessment for BS in Health Science:

Program courses are evaluated each semester via both University faculty evaluations and individual department course evaluations.

Admission:

Applicants must have completed all respiratory science requirements for board certification as part of an accredited associate degree program, and must have approval from the accrediting body to take the board examination prior to matriculating into the completion program.

Health Science Core

MTH 115 Basic Statistics 3 credits
PHL 100 Introduction to Philosophy 3 credits
PSY 123 Introduction to Psychology 3 credits
SOC 101 Comparative Sociology 3 credits ; and either
BIO 121 Human Structure and Function I 4 credits - OR
BIO 211 Anatomy and Physiology I 4 credits

Health Science Completion Requirements

In addition to the Health Science core, and the Misericordia University Core Curriculum Requirements , all students must complete a minimum of 10 credits from the following completion requirements:

HCM 101 Introduction to Health Systems 3 credits
HP 125 Introduction to Patient Navigation 3 credits
HP 135 Health Behavior Change Application 3 credits
HP 235 Prevention and Chronic Disease 3 credits
SOC 122 Social Problems 3 credits ; and either
BIO 122 Human Structure and Function II 4 credits (must be completed prior to enrollment in program) - OR
BIO 212 Anatomy and Physiology II 4 credits (must be completed prior to enrollment in the program)

Respiratory Therapy Transfer Requirements

A maximum of sixty-one (61) credits may be accepted in transfer from an associate’s degree program. Those credits may be applied toward core curriculum, major, and free elective requirements toward the minimum 120 required credits for degree completion.

From the maximum of 61 transferable credits that may be accepted, the student must have a minimum of 28 transferable credits in respiratory therapy courses from an accredited program and either BIO 211 Anatomy and Physiology I or BIO 121 Human Structure and Function I eligible for transfer.
