CRM 101 Introduction to Criminology 3 credits
This course is an introduction to the field of criminology, the social scientific study of crime and criminality as human behavior. We will study the definition, nature, measurement, extent, and patterns of different types of crimes as well as political, legal and social reactions toward crimes and criminals in American society. We will review theoretical explanations of why crime occurs and who offend and critically consider the implications of these for public policy and prevention of crime. We will explore the interconnections of crime, power, inequality, and ethics. We will set these considerations in social and political context by briefly reviewing the processes and problems of the criminal justice system in the US today and its three component parts: law enforcement, the courts, and corrections.
