SOC 350 Sociological Theory 3 credits
This course is the required theory course for the proposed B.A. in Sociology. It provides an in-depth examination of the major theoretical frameworks used by sociologists to understand social phenomena and human behavior in social context. The course takes a social and historical approach to understanding the development of theories of society and social relations. We will trace the development of social theory from the classical ideas about modernity of Marx, Weber, and Durkheim through twentieth century debates over structure versus agency and feminist theorizing to the contemporary theoretical developments in sociology that surround post-colonialism, postmodernity, contemporary gender and feminist theories, and public sociology. We will explore the ideas as well as the social, political, economic, and intellectual milieus of such social theorists as Marx, Durkheim, Weber, Gramsci, Goffman, Garfinkle, the Frankfurt School, Foucault, Bauman, Bourdieu, Habermas, Butler, Firestone, and Beck, among others. Throughout, we will explore how these theories can be applied to analyze contemporary social issues and social structures.
