PHL 214 Philosophy of Love


3 credits

This course will examine philosophical accounts of love in order to explore questions such as: What is love? What distinguishes different types of loving relationships from one another, and how are those different relationships—romantic, filial, fraternal, etc.—related to one another? What do human beings love when they love?, and What is the role of love in a good human life? Readings will span a wide variety of historical periods in order to allow students to recognize historical shifts in philosophical reflections on love.

Prerequisite(s): PHL 100   or HNR 120
