CHM 361 The Effects of Radiation on Biochemical/Biological Systems 1 credit
This one-credit course first presents the student with a brief history of radiochemistry and its fundaments, followed by in-depth discussions of evidence-based mechanisms by which radiation induces a wide spectrum of cellular and pathophysiological effects. Data and photos obtained from survivors of the first atomic bomb are evaluated, and the cause and effects of the accidents at the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plant accidents are discussed. Radiopharmaceutical manufacture and radiation forensics are also considered, in addition to the theoretical bases underlying nuclear reactors and atomic weapons.
Prerequisite(s): CHM 353 or permission of the instructor.
