AIH 204 Drawing Meaning in Healthcare

3 credits

The field of healthcare is filled with signs and symbols.  From complex medical terms to confusing images, patients are often left feeling disinterested, unaware, and lost in the medical jargon and trying to decipher overcomplicated images.  Through an introduction to semiotic theory, students will apply methods of semiotics to art-based projects to simplify these concepts and increase understanding.  This studio art course will thereby focus on two-dimensional illustration through a variety of different media such as pen and ink, colored pencils, and a variety of mixed media.  Key topics in this course include philosophies of Saussure, Pierce, Barthes, and others.  Students will be encouraged to challenge and reinterpret these philosophies as they draw meaning in healthcare.
