CRM 301 Research Methods in Criminology


3 credits

This course is the required methodology course for the B.A. in Criminology. It is designed as an introduction to the practice of social scientific inquiry as applied to criminological research questions. Students will learn the fundamentals of social science research methods, including the process by which research questions are formulated, relevant literature is reviewed, data are collected and analyzed, and results are written up. Topics to be covered include: issues of research design such as conceptualization, operationalization, formulation of research questions, and ethics of social research using human subjects; a brief overview of univariate, bivariate, and multivariate data analysis techniques; and discussion of the nature, strengths/weaknesses including reliability and validity, and appropriate use of various modes of social inquiry, including experiments, surveys, field research, and secondary analysis.
