NSG 542 Advanced Pharmacology for the APRN

3 credits

Major principles of pharmacology are examined in the context of advanced practice nursing across the lifespan. The use of protocols, prescription writing, legal, ethical, monitoring pharmacologic therapies, and economic issues in prescribing are explained and applied in course work. Emphasis is placed on pharmacokinetics, dosages, expected outcomes, and side effects of selected drug categories for acute and chronic health problems. Emerging issues in pharmacy informatics, such as pharmacogenetics, pharmacogenomics, and E-prescribing, are reviewed. By the end of the course, students will develop the critical thinking skills necessary for safe and effective pharmacotherapy management in various clinical settings.
